About FI Friends Travel

A group of tourists posing in front of a historic desert fortress.

FI (Financial Independence) principles got you here. Now it's time to enjoy the view.

FI Friends Travel brings together members of the FI community who love exploring the world alongside like-minded people.

We curate active, international trips designed for curious travelers who want memorable experiences without sacrificing comfort. To keep our trips meaningful and well-paced, we stick to a few core principles about who we are—and who we aren't.

What We Are

  • FI Community-Focused: You’ll travel with people who share your mindset, values, and enthusiasm for financial independence. If you aren't comfortable discussing the 4% rule and Roth Conversions over dinner, this might not be the trip for you. Feel free to bring a partner who's not part of the community, but make sure they know what to expect!
  •  Solo-Friendly Travel: Solo travelers typically make up a quarter to a third of our groups—and as someone who usually travels without my spouse, I make sure solo travelers feel right at home. We always offer a limited number of single rooms with a single supplement fee. If you prefer to avoid the supplement, we will do our best to match you with a same-gender roommate. If a suitable match isn't available, the single supplement will apply.
  • Comfort-Minded Travel: We don't do budget travel or compromise on essentials. Expect 3- and 4-star boutique accommodations with air conditioning, comfortable beds, flushing toilets, and hot water.
  • Centrally Located & Character-Rich: We try to stay in smaller hotels located in or very near the historic heart of each city—putting you within walking distance of the best sights.
  • Organic Connection: We don't schedule formal FI seminars or workshops during our trips. Instead, the best conversations about money, life, and independence happen naturally over shared meals and long drives.
  • Adult-Focused: To maintain a space where everyone can fully unwind and engage in deep-dive conversations, our itineraries are strictly adult-only. (On rare occasions, mature older teens may be considered on a trip-by-trip basis depending on the itinerary and group dynamic).
  • Small Groups: We keep group sizes small—typically 12-20 travelers—to ensure a tight-knit atmosphere and access to unique, local spots that the big tour buses can't reach.

What We Aren't

  • Not Budget / Roughing It: We don't host shoestring trips, pitch tents, or book hostels.
  • Not Slow or Sedentary: Our itineraries are physically and socially active. Expect full days featuring guided neighborhood walks, museum tours, and the occasional short hike.
  • Not Full-Service Luggage Handling: Historic hotels often come with historic charm—and stairs. Many of our central hotels do not have elevators, so you need to be able to carry your own bags from the bus to your room.
  • Not a Structured Conference: If you're looking for daily slide presentations, formal panels, or rigid mastermind sessions, this isn't that.

What Makes a Great FI Friends Traveler?

  • Show Up On Time: Punctuality keeps the itinerary running smoothly for everyone.
  • Stay Flexible: Travel comes with unexpected twists—rolling with the punches keeps the energy light and fun.
  • Bring Positive Energy: Being open-minded, respectful, and engaged makes the trip memorable for the entire group.

About Me

I discovered the FI community in 2018. Like many of you, I headed down the FI rabbit hole...reading the books and listening to the podcasts.

In 2022 I attended my first in person event, a CampFI in Colorado Springs. I was hooked.  I found my tribe.  I have since attended several more Camp FI's and EconoMe conferences, and I lead the Choose FI meetup group in St. Louis.

After 28 years as a broadcast meteorologist, I moved to part time work in March 2024. I did this for a myriad of reasons, but one of them was to travel more.

As someone who loves to travel, loves to plan travel, and loves spending time with the FI community, I thought why not combine those things?

I casually mentioned during introductions at CampFI

Midwest 2024 that I was interested in planning trips for the community to take together.

Numerous attendees told me they wanted to be notified about these trips...and FI Friends Travel was born!
